About The Competition

In Science Olympiad, teams of 15 compete in 23 different events over 7 time blocks. Events range from written tests on topics like Forestry to build events like Flight. Each event has two or three participants, and the sum of the ranks in each event determines the team's score, with a lower score being the most desirable. Science Olympiad is broken into invitational, regional, state, and national tournaments. The invitationals generally serve as practice and experience for teams before regionals (typically early March), where the top four teams qualify for the state tournament, generally held in April. From there, the first place team qualifies for nationals. MSJHS belongs to the Bay Area Regionals and Northern California State Finals. All competitions typically take place on Saturdays during the majority of the day.
